Search in WIS Markus Heene, DWD

2 Agenda Welcome How to start Analysis of GISC Offenbach search queries
Use cases for a search query Digression – geoportal.org Navigation Summary Search in WIS

3 How to start Geo: Rep. of Korea and SYNOP Create use cases
Analyze search behavior of the user based on anonymous log files Geo: Rep. of Korea and SYNOP Search in WIS

4 Full Text Search Full Text Search Geographical Search Terms
Cities: Offenbach, Vienna, Ankara, … Countries: Germany, Austria, Turkey, … Domain Terms Tsunami, Precipitation, Temperature, Space Weather, Gust Station IDs TTAAiiCCCC Output formats NETCDF JPG Language Mix & Typos German “Temperatur” vs. English “Temperature” German “Vereisungsgefahr” CLIAMTE Almost no usage of wildcards like ‘*’ , ‘?’ or logical operators like ‘AND’ & ‘OR’ Search in WIS

5 Extended/Advanced Search, Expert Search & SRU
Geographical search Keyword search Abstract search Title search Data Provider – used by external source for monitoring Expert Search TTAAii Heavily used internally SRU Always used as full text search Search in WIS

6 Search Examples Background Use Case – Search for city “Pljevlja”
5 operational GISCs with 3 different full text search engines Use Case – Search for city “Pljevlja” A user issued a search for “Pljevlja” and was wondering why she can not find her SYNOP products Reason: Metadata contains “Pljevlja, “ and “,” was not registered as word separator in our Oracle Text Search If you issued a search for “Pljevlja” at the 5 operational GISCs you had the following results: 3 GISCs with 4 hits, 1 GISC with 1 hit, 1 GISC with 0 hits; while all 5 GISCs contain the 4 metadata records Use Case – Search for city “Bar” A user issued a search for “Bar” 1 GISC 12 hits, 1 GISC 9 hits, 2 GISCs 5 hits, 1 GISC 2 hits Reason: 1 GISC contains 3 additional records, which are not synchronized 1 GISC contains template metadata for “Marble bar” AMMC records In 1 GISC records for “Marble bar” AMMC are not available Information: 3 GISCs use the WMO Baseline metadata where records for AMMC are available Use Case – Wild card search A user issues a wild card search 3 GISCs do not support wild card search (at least I could not find in the documentation) 1 GISC uses ‘*’ and ‘?’ as wildcards while another GISC use ‘%’ and ‘_’ as wildcards Search in WIS

7 Quality of Metadata Even the best full text search can find only search criteria which are in the metadata Example: Geneva Precipitation Expected result: Main synoptic hour with a station in Geneva Result: All 5 operational GISCs: 0 hits Explanation: In case of synoptic observation the WMO Baseline Metadata contain no information about the measured parameters. A SYNOP metadata record does not contain “domain terms” like: sun duration, precipitation, cloud cover, … The station name is “GENEVE-COINTRIN” Search in WIS

8 Digression – geoportal.org
Search in geoportal.org for “Pljevlja”  Result: 5 hits but only 4 metadata records Search in geoprotal.org for “Geneva AND Precipitation”  Result: 85 hits but if I check samples for WDCGG “urn:x-wmo:md:jp.go.jma.wis.dcpc-wdcgg::p.NWR440N02.O3.NOAA “ Geneva is not in the record present Search in WIS

9 Navigation - CMA Search in WIS

10 Navigation - JMA Search in WIS

11 Summary GISC Offenbach Search Use Cases
Users prefer full text search with search criteria like cities, countries and domain terms Extended / Advanced search is used esp. to limit to certain data provider SRU is only used in full text search Search Use Cases Different full text search engines generate on the same metadata basis different results WMO Baseline metadata do not contain domain terms e.g. case of SYNOP Search in WIS
