A three-year project to improve public services for all Scotland’s communities to flourish

Purpose and aims Purpose Aims
To use evidence to transform public services for all of Scotland’s communities to flourish identify and better understand what is working and not working on public service delivery in Scotland, how we can translate knowledge from setting to setting contribute to the development of a Scottish model of service delivery that brings about transformational change for people living in different places across Scotland

learn what is and what isn’t working in their local area
encourage collaborative learning with a range of local authority, business, public sector and community partners better understand what effective policy interventions and effective services look like promote the use of evidence in planning and service delivery help organisations get the skills and knowledge they need to use and interpret evidence and embed its use in their everyday working practices

We work across the four pillars of the Scottish Government’s Christie commission

We work with local partners to help provide different kinds of Evidence to solve local problems…….

…and create a resource where others can access the evidence relevant to them

We’re conducting Collaborative Action Research……..
………with four of Scotland's Community Planning Partnerships to support them with better use of evidence

We investigate what makes Good Leaders in local authorities and communities

We’re looking at What Works in Improvement and Effectiveness for public service delivery………
by exploring the Language and Structures of successful transformation to understand what works and why

Evaluation Approaches
Providing evidence of effectiveness and demonstrating the utility of novel approaches to evaluating local, area-based interventions:- Evaluability assessments: a collaborative approach to deciding whether, when and how to evaluate Synthetic controls: evaluating area-based interventions by comparing real with modelled ‘synthetic’ areas Find out more at: whatworksscotland.ac.uk/publications/http

Through events such as Policy Reunions we will explore what Governance models and frameworks work in the successful planning and delivery of local public services in Scotland

We work in partnership with national and local agencies interested in public service reform
And we’re investigating what makes a good Partnership

We help local planners think about how to Prevent social problems before they start

Capabilities and Outcomes We are ‘operationalising’ the Capability Approach as a basis for public service reform

We’ll increase understanding of the conditions that encourage and inhibit the Spread and Sustainability of improved service planning and delivery

We’re also working at a national level with:
