1 Write one appropriate word that sums up the experience of an evacuee on your Post-It note.

2 Learning Objective: To learn to develop an acrostic poem.
Good: To define an acrostic poem. Great: To analyse an acrostic poem. Even Better: To create an acrostic poem. Language for learning: acrostic

3 Good: To define an acrostic poem.
Lonely days fade into years Only myself for company Nobody around, a solitary life Even though I want to socialise Longing for someone to talk to Year after year, all alone. Good: What is an acrostic poem? Discuss it with your partner. The answer closest to the definition I got on the internet will get extra credits.

4 An acrostic poem is a poem in which the initial letter of each line spells out a word, often the subject of the poem or the name of the person to whom the poem is dedicated.

5 Great: To analyse an acrostic poem.
Lonely days fade into years Only myself for company Nobody around, a solitary life Even though I want to socialise Longing for someone to talk to Year after year, all alone. Good: Write down three reasons why this is a good/bad acrostic poem. 1.) 2.) 3.) Great: Take out all the words or phrases that relate to the topic “Loneliness”. “Longing” Even Better: Explain your choices in quotes. The word “longing” shows that the writer is desperate to have friends. AfL: Thunk- if you didn’t understand your task, then what would you have done?

6 Even Better: To create an acrostic poem.
Pick the word from the whiteboard that you think best sums up the experiences of an evacuee (or choose “Evacuated”). 1.) Think of words or phrases beginning with the letters that go with the topic. S, C, A, R, Y Shivering, Coping badly, Always frightened, Really anxious, Yearning for safety 2.) Format them like an acrostic: Shivering 3.) Complete your poem in full sentences that relate to your topic (being Evacuated) Shivering with the fright of leaving home AfL: Students read their poems to the class.

7 Year 8: Lead Learner Task 1:
1.) Is yours a red, amber or green answer? 2.) Do you think this acrostic is good or bad? Why? Year 8: Lead Learner Task 2: 1.) How far have you got through your poem? 2.) What words have you used that relate to the theme?
