2 Natural Disasters What is a volcano ?
A volcano is an opening or rupture, in a planet’s surface or crust, which allows hot magma, volcano ash and gases to escape from below the surface.

3 Where do you find volcanoes ?
Natural Disasters Where do you find volcanoes ? The largest volcano on Earth is Hawaii’s Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa is about 10km tall from the sea floor to the summit. The most active volcano in the continental USA is Mt. Helens (in (western Washington State). The largest volcano in our Solar System is Olympus Mons on the planet Mars.

4 Natural disasters How does a volcano start ?
First a volcano makes something called magma from melted rock. It has to form at the bottom of the volcano and then starts its way up to the main vent. It usually takes a long time. The magma goes up to the main vent slowly while it is still getting hotter – this turns into lava. The lava blasts out of the volcano along with ash rocks, and a cloud of dust that is very thick.

If you are in a dangerous place you must RUN to a safe place and wait ! A volcano is very dangerous and a lot of people have died because of it .

The conclusion is that a volcano is a very dangerous natural disaster which can cause death to many people and destroy homes and even cities or villages. In these volcanic areas the inhabitants must always be sure to protect themselves and find a safe place during the time when the volcano erupts.
