Audience Research Questionnaire Results
2
The first two questions I asked were the gender and age of the person completing the questionnaire. From these results I found out that the majority of the audience is year olds, with 15 between There was then year olds, year olds, and 1 over 30 year old. This shows that my magazine will mainly be targeting year olds – mainly students. However I will try to target other age groups as well. The main gender of my questionnaire results were female, with 70% female and 30% male. This means that my main audience will be female, but I will also target males.

These two questions focused on subcultures and interests of the reader
These two questions focused on subcultures and interests of the reader. The main subculture that featured in my questionnaire were ‘mainstream’ and ‘rocker’. The most results appeared in the ‘other’ column. In future use for other questionnaires I should put a box for the reader to tell me exactly what subculture they fit into. By these results I will make sure my magazine is focused more on the music and rockier music. I will do this by making sure my magazine has music related elements for both ‘rockers’ and ‘mainstream’ subcultures, and make sure my adverts appeal to these groups.

My next question focused on general magazines and which the reader reads. These included lifestyle magazines and music magazines. The largest result was again ‘other’ which again next time I must improve by letting them tell me what they mean by other. However the main magazines read were Glamour magazine and NME magazine. NME is a music magazine focused on rock music and indie music, which matches with my subculture results. Glamour magazine is a fashion magazine focusing on females interested in shopping and lifestyle. This also works well with my other results as my main audience are female.

The main regional magazine read by my audience is Now Then Magazine, followed behind by Exposed and Chic and then Toast. From these results I will make sure my magazine has a more minimalistic and professional look and house style, as Toast is a more colloquial and informal magazine. Now Then is a very artistic magazine so I will take inspiration mainly from this. I then asked the audience what their reasons were to not reading any regional magazines. This included they ‘don’t see the point’. They ‘don’t like them’ and ‘never see any’. From these results I will make sure mine does not conform to typical regional magazines and challenges the traditional style of a regional magazine to reach out to more audiences, I will also make sure my magazine is distributed well and to more locations.
6
I then asked if the audience would pick up a free magazine if they were available to them. They replied mainly with yes, with around 74% saying they would pick them up. After this question I asked what is missing from their current favourite magazines. These include: ‘more interesting house style’, ‘interesting content’, ‘concert reviews’ and ‘more interviews and less useless fashion articles’. To address these I will make sure my magazine has a interesting house style to stand out to the audience and will make sure it contains a wide variety of interesting and focused contents. The one about ‘less useless fashion articles’ actually disagrees with my other results as stereotypically females like fashion and the most read magazine in my results was Glamour, a fashion magazine.

For my next question I decided to ask them to rank magazine elements from favourite, to least favourite. The most favourite voted elements were the interviews features, the contents and reviews for gigs and music. To address this I will make sure my content is varied and appropriate for my target audience, and I will include gig, festival and album reviews. I will also feature interviews with artists/famous people. The least favourite elements were the price and the adverts. The fact that my magazine is free helps, and to address the dislike of adverts I will make my adverts interesting, creative and make sure they are tailored for my target audience.

For the final question I asked, again, for my reader to rank
For the final question I asked, again, for my reader to rank. This time I asked them to rank possible house styles. The most popular out of these colours were pinks and purples and yellows. Yellow is the first colour that your eyes are drawn to so this result is unsurprising as it is the easiest colour to see. Stereotypically pinks and purples are feminine colours which is again unsurprising that they were the most popular as my main audience is females. I personally preferred black and white, but I will try to create my house style for both my preference and my audiences. For this cover of ‘Mode’ magazine the colour purple was used efficiently and looks professional without looking too informal.
