Identity 1 : Culture People scared of ‘Americanisation’ of Culture
Wanted to be and to be seen as different 1947 – Massey Commission – What can we do to protect Canadian culture 1952 – CBC sets up TV Network 1957 – Canadian Council – Government cash for Canadian artists and writer CRTC established – 35% radio and 50% primetime TV must be Canadian content

Identity 2 – Federal or Provincial?
Federal government given lots of power during World War Two – Total war Shift left in politics – lassaiz-faire to social programs provided by government New social programs came out of the war – hospital care, unemployment insurance and pensions Also Canada newly wealthy from resources and income tax Disagreement over who should get what
7
Identity 2 – Federal or Provincial?
Federal Government given Tax raising powers – especially income tax Money given to provinces for social programs Poorer provinces (have nots) helped by Equalisation Payments from wealthier provinces (haves). Provinces get control of Natural Resources New mega projects to use cash to build infrastructure – roads, bridges. Dams etc.

The Flag Debate Red Ensign Pearson Flag
9
Pearson Vs Diefenbaker
Pearson – Canada needs it’s own unique flag to reflect it’s unique national character. The maple leaf should be used as the symbol for Canada as was used in World War One Diefenbaker – A country is a result of it’s history. The Canadian flag should respect heritage of Canada as being founded from France and UK.
