5C Gases Around Us Air and other important gases

2 AIR The Earth is surrounded by a mixture of gases. We call these gases AIR. We can feel and use the air when the wind blows. Air is made up from a number of different gases; these include oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapour.

3 Animals need to breath air in order to stay alive
Animals need to breath air in order to stay alive. Animals take the air into their lungs. The lungs take the OXYGEN out of the air and expel CARBON DIOXIDE.

4 Plants and animals rely on each other to produce the gases they need to breathe and stay alive.
Plants take the CARBON DIOXIDE out of the air and use it to maintain their health, growth and everyday plant functions. They produce and give out a waste gas called OXYGEN. Oxygen out Carbon Dioxide in

5 Plants and animals rely on each other to produce the gases they need to breathe and stay alive.
Animals take OXYGEN out of the air they breathe in, and it is pumped round their bodies to make energy for movement and growth. They breathe out a waste gas called CARBON DIOXIDE. Carbon Dioxide out Oxygen in

6 NATURAL GASES Plants and animals breathe and produce natural gases. Plants and animals need each other to produce the gases which they need to survive. Plants breathe in CARBON DIOXIDE and produce the waste gas OXYGEN. Animals breathe in OXYGEN and produce the waste gas CARBON DIOXIDE. Plants and animals produce gases that each need to breathe and stay alive. OXYGEN IN OUT CARBON DIOXIDE IN OUT

7 POLLUTING GASES Examples of Poisonous and Polluting Gases
Human actions and natural disasters can produce gases that enter the atmosphere and cause harmful effects. These effects may poison the air that both plants and animals breathe. Examples of Poisonous and Polluting Gases Car exhaust fumes. These gases are poisonous and cause breathing problems Volcanoes spew poisonous gases into the atmosphere when they erupt Some factories produce toxic gases. These gases are poisonous and cause breathing problems Burning waste, especially plastic and rubber, produces poisonous gases

8 USING GASES Air contains a number of gases, including Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide - both important to enable animals and plants to breathe. There are also a number of other useful gases. These include: Helium A gas that is lighter than air and is used to make balloons float. Nitrous Oxide This gas is used as an anaesthetic in hospitals. Butane This gas burns easily and is used in lighters and caravan gas cookers.

9 USING AIR As well as breathing, we can use air for many different purposes. These include: Sailing Hair drying Flying Parachuting Kite Flying Balloons
