1 Ion Identification Lab
Using Qualitative Analysis to Determine the Ion Composition of a Solution

2 What is Qualitative Analysis?
Qualitative Analysis is a method used to determine the composition of a sample through the use of chemical tests. For this lab, we will use the method to determine monatomic and polyatomic ions in a solution Our goal is to use those ions to write the names and formulas of the compounds your teacher used to make your UNKNOWN.

3 Real-World Applications
What examples of chemical testing are used in common, everyday life? Brainstorm some:

4 Real-World Applications
What examples of chemical testing are used in common, everyday life? Brainstorm some: Pregnancy test Strep test Drug test (OTC) Hard water HIV test (rapid version) Lead paint test (hardware store)

5 What to expect Day 1—Cations & Anions Tests Day 2—Testing your unknown
Follow the procedures to see what a POSITIVE test result looks like when a certain ion is present There are 3 anions to test. There are 3 cations to test. One side of the lab is doing cation tests. The other side is doing anions tests. Results & station must be CHECKED & STAMPED by me before you can move on. Take a picture! You will be given a small sample of an Unknown solution. You will need to run all 6 tests on your unknown. Results & station must be CHECKED & STAMPED by me before you can move on. You should have 3 Y’s…that means your solution tested positive for 3 of the ions Your Y’s must be a combination of anions & cations…WHY???
