2 Industries where sound plays an important part…
The media Industry is a huge career path to go down. Especially when there are multiple departments to work in. In terms of Sound and audio, there are many companies that focus specifically on sound. Sound also plays an important part in various industries and departments. For example, sound is needed in Films and animation, for people to hear and understand what is going on. Sound is also a big part of the Radio industry because people are listening to the sound of people talking, music and audio advertisements. Sound is relevant in Film or movies because people would find what they’re watching, boring or bad quality. With out sound or even any dialogue, there would be no point in watching the film. Audio and sound companies are a great relevance in this department. Sound in films can also set the mood or the atmosphere of a specific scene. For example, a certain music track can make a scene much more interesting and add a sense of drama, or romance etc. Sound or dialogue can also make a character more interesting and help the audience engage and relate with them. This is why sound is overall, so important and relevant. Audio is the key part to radio because people are listening to speech and sound/music. Without sound in radio, people would be listening to nothing, This is because people rely on sound as there is no picture with radio, so sound is essential in this form of the media industry. A job in radio can include becoming a sound technician, sound engineer or a sound recording engineer. This shows the importance of sound in this particular industry, and how vital sound is for radio companies. Three example of Media based Industries: Film, TV and Radio… In these different media based industries for Film, TV and Radio, there are multiple sound jobs for each one. Sound plays a great role in these particular media based industries and it is very important to treat sound as a relevant need in media. 5 SOUND JOBS IN FILM – JOB 1 Job 1: Sound Engineer
Description of the Job: This job requires you to work with the technical side of sound and audio. A sound engineer will often fix problems and help or work along side editors or help with sound fittings and effects. A sound engineer will also be very familiar with specific equipment used in editing or audio. They will mostly use electrical equipment. This job role is essential in any job related in the Film industry. Study/Qualifications: To become a sound engineer you need to go down some specific study paths. For example, some courses to help get on the road to being a sound engineer include, a Level 1 or 2 Award in Sound Engineering and Music Technology or foundation degrees or a degree in sound engineering, music technology or technical theatre arts. These degrees can help people become a sound engineer and taking these specific study paths are needed in the process to the job. Technical/Creative or office based? The job is a mixture between technical and creative. For example, it is technical in the aspect that you need to be familiar with electronic and sound based equipment, and know how to use it well. Also you need to be able to help fix problems and technical issues. Are transferable skills needed for the job? Yes, for this job, some transferable skills needed include problem solving, being organised and patience. These skills will help performance and make you a better person for this job. Individuals in this job/achievements: Young Guru – He is a 42 year old sound engineer. He was nominated, in 2011 for a Grammy award for the work on a song called ‘’Empire State of Mind’’. At what point of the production do they start their work? Normally in the editing process, so essentially Post production.

6 SOUND JOBS IN FILM – JOB 2 Job 2: Foley sound
Description of the Job: A Foley Artist will be the one to create sounds or sound effects. They generate sound effects through the use of physical props. For example, a Foley Artist can make the sound of horse feet on the floor by clapping empty coconut shells together. This simulates the sound effects of a horse running and an editor can put these sound in place. Their wok is relevant and important because not all sound is picked up on set recording. Foley is essentially Non diegetic sound. Study/Qualifications: A Foley Artist will need some qualifications along the way, in order to succeed and gain a job in Foley. For example, a degree in either Arts, music, electronics, maths or sound technology is needed and a post graduate qualification in a subjects like sound would be beneficial too. Technical/Creative or office based? This job role is a mixture between technical and creative. For example, you need to be a creative and inventive person in order to make and produce realistic sounds. Also finding the right material and hardware to make these sounds is an aspect where creativity is needed. However there are technical aspects to the job too. Technical in the sense that you are recording these sounds made. A Foley artist must be familiar with the electronic aspect and microphones used when recording the sounds. Are transferable skills needed for the job? Transferable skills are needed in most jobs. However in Foley, it is good to be a patient and well organised person as well as creative and someone who thinks outside the box, in order to make more sounds and better ones too. Individuals in this job/achievements: Jack Foley – Worked at universal studios and made Foley sound a thing. He has added sound and made effects for many films and movies. For example, his last job in Foley was on a film called ‘’Sparticus’’. At what point of the production do they start their work? Post production. Foley artists usually Make sound that is added into the editing process of any film.

7 SOUND JOBS IN FILM – JOB 3 Job 3: Sound editor
Description of the Job: This is a very creative and professional job. It involves collecting and gathering and picking out sound recordings in preparation for the final out come of the film. For example, a Sound editor can mix sounds in any industry in media, especially film and TV production. A sound editor can work along side the editor in studios and editing rooms. They can help touch up and make scenes better with sound effects etc. It is essentially Non diegetic sound. Study/Qualifications: A post graduate qualification in sound will help contribute to the chances of this job and a degree in wither, sound, art or music and even maths can help. Technical/Creative or office based? This job is a more technical job. You are working with and handling equipment and working on a sound mixing board, in a studio etc. However, you have to be good at listening and gathering and putting sounds appropriately together. So essentially, this is a creative side to the job. Are transferable skills needed for the job? For this job, skills such as financial and organisational skills are needed or would help. Individuals in this job/achievements: Lon Bender – He is an American sound editor and won an award for best sound effects editing in the film, ‘’Braveheart’’. At what point of the production do they start their work? A sound editor will edit and add sounds in post production. This is after the filming for a movie has already been done.

8 SOUND JOBS IN TV – JOB 1 Job 1: Sound Recordist
Description of the Job: A sound recordist records sound on set or on the location at which a program is being filmed. They usually film alongside the camera man, who is capturing the film or moving image. The sound recordist will often try and film the best quality and clearest sound on set, as possible. They record diegetic sound. This is sound heard by everyone on set. Study/Qualifications: For this job, it is shown that you don’t need any specific qualifications, just a strong passion and liking for sound and recording. But it is advised to get some sort of qualification in sound or media. This is vital in ensuring that you want and will get the job. For example, a degree in sound. Technical/Creative or office based? This job is not done in a office, unless the set being filmed is based in an office. This job is very much a technical job and there is a high use of microphones and electronic equipment usage. It is essentially a job packed with technology and is therefor quite a technical job. However, some creativity can be used. You can be creative with the angles or the microphone and the best ways to pick up sound. Are transferable skills needed for the job? This job really requires you to have skills such as patience and self discipline. Especially if you’re holding up a microphone all day. Individuals in this job/achievements: Chris Watson – he has been referred to as one of the worlds best sound recordists. At what point of the production do they start their work? – A sound recordist will work on set so they will record the sounds as it is happening. Essentially they will work all the way through.

9 SOUND JOBS IN TV – JOB 2 Job 2: Sound Assistant
Description of the Job: A Sound Assistant helps record the best sound quality ever. They can help record on a location or even in a studio. The Sound Assistant will quite often work closely along side the sound supervisors, who essentially oversee all the work done. Study/Qualifications: For this specific job, it is know that you need to have experience. This helps your chances of getting the job. However there are courses in media and departments such as sound technology and audio engineering, at degree level that can be needed to get the job and meet the requirements needed by the employer, Technical/Creative or office based? This job is a more technical job. Working with various equipment and technology and helping record and get the best sounds possible for production and the TV program. Some creativity can be needed in terms of different ways to record sounds and better ways too. The job can be either outside on a set, or done ad edited in an office or editing room. Are transferable skills needed for the job? The skills are essentially the same as the skills needed for the job of a sound recordist. For example, transferable skills such as patience and financial skills are needed. Individuals in this job/achievements: I couldn’t find specific or even well known individuals who are sound assistants. However, it is a very important role in the sound and TV industry. At what point of the production do they start their work? – A sound recordist will work on set so they will record the sounds as it is happening. However they can also work in a studio and with the editor. So essentially they can work in post production or all the way through filming.

10 SOUND JOBS IN RADIO – JOB 1
Job 1: Sound Technician Description of the Job: A sound technician is in charge or responsible for maintaining or operating the equipment in the studio. For example, they can produce sound by using equipment but if there are any technical faults they can be the ones to fix or handle the problem. They are also responsible for looking after the technology. Study/Qualifications: A degree is not a hundred percent needed for this particular job. However, having a degree in subjects like music or sound engineering will increase the chances of getting the job. Technical/Creative or office based? This job is extremely technical and is all about looking after and fixing problems with technological equipment. It can be done in an office but can also be about going to different places and helping people with technological problems. Are transferable skills needed for the job? This job would require someone with great problem solving skills and patience as it does require a patient person to help fix problems. Individuals in this job/achievements: Bill Porter was a famous sound/audio engineer. At what point of the production do they start their work? – They will usually help fix problems whilst on air or helping with radio equipment that needs fixing or storing. They can also provide equipment for other people in radio.

11 SOUND JOBS IN RADIO – JOB 2
Job 2: Radio Producer Description of the Job: A radio producer will take care and manage the whole and entire production process in radio. This is from live to recorded radio programs. This is a demanding job and is vital in keeping a radio show running smoothly and effectively. Study/Qualifications: For this job, you are not required to have a degree for it. However experience and possibly a radio course in a higher educational level will help you with understanding and also raise your chances of getting the job in radio. Technical/Creative or office based? This job is mostly technical and can be studio or office based. This is because it is done in a radio studio and is based around using technology and equipment and is there fore quite a technical job. Are transferable skills needed for the job? You will need to be patient and well organised and have an understanding of radio and radio production. Also communication skills are key. Individuals in this job/achievements: Chris Evans is an English presenter and producer. At what point of the production do they start their work? – They can work in post production and work all the way through recording live programs.
