Two year 8 pupils completed a project on space suit design

2. Tim Peake was the first British Astronaut to walk in space

3. Why are space suits needed?
Extreme temperatures -100oC to 120oC
Blood and body fluids would boil and then freeze!
Circulating water keeps the astronauts
at the right temperature

4. But a serious safety issue arose………..

5. Water was leaking into Tim Kopra’s sealed helmet……….

6. The water was cold – Tim Kopra knew it had leaked from the cooling system

7. Superabsorbant chemicals are used in helmets to absorb leaked water

8. The experiment
The experiment measured the effect of salt on the volume of water these chemicals would absorb

9. Body fluids contain salt

10. Conclusions
Much less water was absorbed when salt was present
Salt in body fluids makes space suits less effective
If an astronaut’s helmet leaks, the astronaut should stay calm and not sweat!
