1 7.8 Multiplying Polynomials
Algebra 10.0

2 Main Idea You will have many polynomials that are being multiplied and will need to use exponent rules. Don’t use the exponent rules on the coefficients!

3 Ex 1- Multiplying Monomials
Monomial Products: 1) Multiply regular numbers 2) Add the exponents with the same base

4 Practice 1

5 Ex 2- Multiplying Polynomials & Monomials
Monomial and Polynomial Products: Use distributive property Then multiply regular numbers and add exponents

6 Practice 2

7 Ex 3 Multiplying a Binomial and a Binomial
You use the distributive property twice. (x + 3)(x + 2) There are two methods you can use to multiply a binomial by a binomial. BINOMIAL BY BINOMIAL PRODUCTS: FOIL (the most common for binomial products) Punnett Square (can be used for any polynomial product) You can use either method. Know how to use both.

8 FOIL

9 MULTIPLY BINOMIALS FOIL METHOD (x + 3)(x + 2) PUNNETT SQUARE F = First
O = Outside I = Inside L = Last (x + 3)(x + 2) PUNNETT SQUARE

10 Ex 3- Product of Binomials

11 Ex 3- Product of Binomials

12 Practice 3

13 Ex 4 Multiplying Polynomials
Polynomial Products: use a big Punnett Square

14 Ex 4 Multiplying Polynomials
Polynomial Products: use a big Punnett Square

15 Practice 4

16 Review When multiplying monomials what do you do with the exponents, bases and coefficients? When multiplying a polynomial by a monomial what property do you use? When multiplying binomials what methods can you use? When multiplying polynomials what method works better?
