2 Welcome to MSJC! What will we do today?
Introductions About MSJC What’s your educational goal? What’s your major? Review Requirements for AA/AS and Transfer Prepare you for your educational planning appointment Learn how to use your Eagle Advisor account Take a campus tour Review the goals with students and let students know that the review of Eagle Advisor is optional for students who already feel comfortable using it.

Counselor asks students what they have heard about MSJC and writes it on white board. Ask students if they think each item is true or false and explain why. Ask students what they are concerned about and address concerns. Ask what they are excited about and validate! Statements Activity

Earn an employment concentration Earn a certificate Earn an non-transfer Associate’s Degree Earn a Transfer Associate’s Degree to transfer to a 4-year university Explain the difference between employment concentration and certificates and non-transfer associates and transfer associates.

5 What is your major? Break into pairs
Discuss your educational goal and your major Why did you select that major? Introduce your partner to the group, stating his/her name and major and why it was selected Counselor facilitates breaking students into pairs and asking that they discuss educational goal and major with each other and why that major was selected. Students introduce their partner and state major and why it was chosen.

6 Requirements for Non-Transfer Associates
60 units Classes 70+ 2.0 GPA General Education 30 units Option A Program (Major) Requirements 18+ units 1. Non-Transfer AA/AS Requirements or 2. Certificate Requirements Electives Explain the requirements for an associates degree; differentiate certificate requirements and associates requirements.

7 Requirements for Transfer Associates
60 units Classes 100+* 2.7+ GPA General Education 39-42 units Option B CSU Option C CSU, UC*, Private Program (Major) Requirements 1. Transfer AA/AS 2. Transfer Major Preparation Explain the requirements for transfer to a 4-year university.

8 General Education Patterns
Transfer to CSU Only OPT B Transfer to UC, Private or CSU OPT C: IGETC Associates Degree OPT A Counselor explains how to read a General Education worksheet, using examples. Assure students they don’t need to understand everything at this point because their counselor will go over it individually in their one-on-one appointment. But they should know which one they want to follow.

9 Can I be Done in Two Years?
Fall Spring Summer 15 units 60 units by Spring 12 + units = Full-Time 9-11 units = ¾ Time 6-8 units = ½ Time The Success Formula: 15 units = 15 Hours of Class Time/week +30 Hours of assignments/Homework 45 Hours per week for school = Full-Time Job Show students how to distribute their units in two years. Explain what it takes to be full-time and how we make the determination that a student is a full-time student based on units taken and the time they need to input for their studies.

11 Paying for college Types of Financial Aid:
Fees must be paid within four days of course registration unless financial aid is in place (70% of MSJC students receive financial aid). Types of Financial Aid: FAFSA - Free application for Federal Student Aid Apply online at: Application for Federal and State Grants There is a limit to how much financial aid you can receive! Board of Governor’s Fee Waiver (BOG Waiver) California residents only Must be in good academic standing Pays tuition fees only Must be completed before enrolling in courses Veterans or Dependents of Veterans California Dream Act For AB540 qualifying students Scholarships Check our Financial Aid site Review Financial Aid basics. Students do not have to be enrolled full time to receive aid. Students must reapply every year. There is a limit to how much financial aid you can receive so it is important to declare your goal early. You must be in good academic standing to receive aid or a fee waiver.

12 Tips for Success Take care of your financial aid—it is not forever!
Earn passing grades in all your classes. Seek help early. Be aware of deadlines: drop a course; apply for graduation, etc. Consult with a counselor before making academic decisions and ask questions.

13 Meeting with a Counselor
Your Counselor will: Treat you with respect. Listen to your concerns. Answer your questions. Assist you with your career choice. Walk-you through the requirements to complete your goal. Refer you to the best services on campus. Find you assistance whenever you need it.

14 Planning a Schedule and Registering for Classes
Look over the general education requirements before your One-on-One meeting with a counselor. Review course descriptions and think about classes you would like to take. Learn how to log in to your Eagle Advisor to check your registration date, sign up for classes, and check your financial aid status. Learn how to look up course descriptions. Complete the evaluation Take a campus tour (led by an MSJC student) Walk students through their Eagle Advisor Account and the link “Search for Classes than Register”
