Greek gods & Goddesses Greek mythology was first created around 2000 BC, but was not fully developed until 700s BC. It came to an end in the 9th century, but some people still choose to believe. Greek mythology is the ancient Greeks way of understanding the natural world. They used gods and mythical creatures to explain strange events such as where they came from. It was almost a religion to them. The olympians were born when their father Kronos, who created the world, started eating his children(the olympians). Zeus tricked Kronos and killed him, becoming the king of the gods.

Aphrodite Goddess of love, desire, and beauty
Had a magical girdle that compelled everyone to desire her Two account of birth – Daughter of Zeus and Dione; came from the sea on a giant scallop Married to Hephaestus, however, she had an affair her brother Ares, god of war Also known as Venus

Athena Goddess of wisdom, craft, and war
Daughter of Zeus; didn’t have mother; believed to have sprang full grown in armor from Zeus’ forehead Zeus’ favorite child; allowed to use his weapons including his thunderbolt fierce in brave in battle; however, she only took part in wars that defended the state and home from outside enemies Invented the bridle (permitted man to tame horses), the trumpet, the flute, the pot, the rake, the plow, etc. Became the goddess of Athens after winning a contest between Poseidon and herself by offering the olive tree to the Athenians

Hera Supreme goddess; patron of marriage and childbirth
Special interest in protecting married women Zeus’ wife and sister, whom Zeus occasionally cheated on Sacred animals: cow & peacock Favored the city of Argos Due to Zeus’ cruelty towards Hera and other gods, Hera took advantage and asked the to join her in a revolt. Most stories concerning Hera deal with her jealousy and her plans for revenge against Zeus Also known as Juno

Hermes God of commerce, messenger of the Olympic gods
Quick acting and cunning; able to move swiftly between the world of man and the world of gods (acting as a messenger between the two) Protector of the travelers, thieves, and athletes Occasionally tricked the other gods for amusement or in the intent of protecting humans Also served as the guide of souls of the dead to the underworld Appears in myths including the myths of the Odyssey and Pandora Also known as Mercury and Ermis

Poseidon God of the sea and protector of all aquatic features
Brother of Zeus and Hades Married Amphitrite, one of the granddaughters of the titan Oceanus Created the first ever horse to impress Demeter, whom at one point he desired Weapon: Trident; which could make the earth shake, causing earthquakes Second to Zeus in power amongst the gods Known to have had a series of disputes with other gods during his attempts to take over their cities. Also known as Neptune
