2 DIRECT QUESTIONS Subject questions: when the question word is the subject of the sentence Who dropped the glass? Object questions: When the question word refers to the object of the sentence. What did you drop?

3 PREPOSITIONS IN QUESTIONS
When a question word is the object of a preposition, the preposition usually comes at the end of the clause, especially in an informal style. That is why we often put a preposition at the end of a question. Who are you talking to? What are you looking at?

4 SHORT QUESTIONS I’m going out. Where to? Who with?
Short Questions: common in conversation I’m going out. Where to? Who with? I didn’t go to the party. How come? I need a paintbrush. What for?

5 INDIRECT QUESTIONS We use them to ask questions in a more polite way or for very personal questions. We need an opening phrase. Could you tell me…? Do you know…? I was wondering… Do you have any idea…? I’d like to know… Would it be possible… Is there any chance… Do you mind me asking…

6 INDIRECT QUESTIONS WH Questions: DIRECT: When does the train leave?
INDIRECT: Could you tell me WHEN THE TRAIN LEAVES? DIRECT: Why did she arrive late? INDIRECT: Do you have any idea WHY SHE ARRIVED late?

7 INDIRECT QUESTIONS Yes/No Questions: we use if.
DIRECT: Do you like pizza? INDIRECT: Can I ask you IF YOU LIKE PIZZA? DIRECT: Is Mary single? INDIRECT: Do you know IF MARY IS SINGLE?

8 MAKE THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS INDIRECT: Can you tell me…?
Did she go out last night? What does your mother do? Who are you? Is she interested in a new job? Why did you buy ten bottles of vodka? Which colour do you prefer? Have you finished your homework?
