2 Glazing What is glaze? Why do we have to glaze? What is glaze made of?
What are the different textual effect? What kind of glazes are there to use? What are the different methods?

3 What is glaze? Glaze is a coating which is painted on the surface of a finished clay piece. The glaze is composed of various minerals mixed with water. When subjected to high temperatures in the kiln, the minerals melts & fuses to form a very hard, permanent coating over the clay.

The function of glaze is: A. Safe for eating or drinking B. Make it pretty C. Make it waterproof D. Make it long lasting

5 What Glaze is Made Of What are the components in glaze and their function in glaze? Silica is a glass former Alumina is a stabilizer, it promotes viscosity, hardness, and durability. Fluxes promote melting Oxides / Stains give the pigment for color. (Iron, Copper, Colbalt, Rutile, Umber, and so on)

6 What are the different textual effects glaze can create?
Matt – not shiny Glossy – shiny Satin – semi-shiny Transparent – see through Translucent – barely see through Opaque – can’t see through

7 The Function of Glaze A. Seal the pores of the clay
B. To create a surface texture, usually glassy C. To provide color D. To make stronger

8 What types of Glaze are there to use?
All glazes are expensive, there are many brands of glaze. Traditional Over Glaze – most common kind used in school. Always needs 3 coats, comes in a variety of textual effects, doesn’t always layer well and hard to see what the final colors will look like. Underglaze – Versatile, comes in several colors, can be mixed and layered like paints. Expensive to use. Easy to see what the colors will look like. Needs a final coat of glaze over top to seal them.

9 What are the different methods of applying glaze
A. Brush on – apply 3 coats with a paint brush B. Dipped – dunked into a bucket C. Poured – small amonts of glazed dribbled over already brushed on pottery D. Sponged – sponges are dipped in glaze and pressed on pottery with shapes and textures

10 Brush On Use a soft brush Apply even layers Must have 3 coats
Let dry between coats - (does not take long to dry) Always layer dark coats on top of light coats

12 Pour On Dip only once Can run or drip by accident Waste a lot of glaze
It’s a little unpredictable

13 Sponge On Dip sponge into glaze and press onto clay
Only need to apply once Must work dark colors over light

14 What are the different methods of applying glaze
Scraffitto – pottery that is coated with glaze and scratched into Slip Trailing – Glaze in put in a bottle and used like a drawing tool to trail or draw into pottery Sprayed – glazed is applied with an airbrush

15 Scraffito Apply 3 coats of glaze with a brush
When dry, carve or draw into glaze

16 Slip Trailing Put glaze in a bottle with syringe
