Can we speed this up? Efficiencies in Qualitative Data Analysis with Atlas.ti Basics Artineh Samkian Natasha Neumann Nancy Hong

2 What we will cover today:
How to create an Atlas.ti project How to analyze using both a priori and emergent codes How to retrieve quotations for a particular code How to create and link memos to quotations How to create a few key outputs

3 But first the example study:
Study Title: A Case Study On The Planning And Implementation Of A Dual Language Immersion Program In A K-12 School District Research Questions: How and for what reasons did a K-12 district plan for a DLIP? What is the nature of implementation in the first year of DLIP in one K-12 district?

4

5 How to create an Atlas.ti Project

6 Considerations: Where you will save everything Whether you plan on having multiple versions (can distinguish by date)

7 Here is where you can add/import the following:
We will only cover these Considerations: Make sure all your documents are in their “best” state for analysis before importing. Make sure documents are in a location you want to keep them in for the duration of your analysis. Atlas.ti links to those documents.

8 Documents = documents you have imported for analysis (i. e
Documents = documents you have imported for analysis (i.e., interview transcripts, field notes) Codes = labels you have created for segments of text (can be a priori or emergent) Quotations = segments you have highlighted and coded Memos = notes you have written to yourself (i.e., reflective memos, analytic memos, methodological memos)

9 Import documents to be analyzed
Click on the + button. Click on “Import Documents…” Browse to your document and click OK. Continue until all documents have been added to the project NOTE: Atlas.ti will initially order them based on the order of import. This can be changed later, but if you don’t want to bother with it, import in the order you wish to see them in the Atlas.ti Document Manager

10 2a. How to analyze using a priori codes

11 Start by creating your a priori codes from your conceptual framework / program logic model / theory of change

12

13 All “Planning” codes will start with a P and Atlas will arrange them together in the Code manager
All “Implementation” codes will start with an I All “Outcome” codes will start with an O Click on Tab each time to progress to the next code When done with all codes, click on “Add”

14 Code! Click on Documents icon to reveal documents on the left pane
Double click on a document to start coding it Click on Code icon to reveal a priori codes on the left pane Read, think, analyze (use your RQs, your conceptual framework etc). Select text to be coded Click on code to be applied and drag and drop onto the selected text in the center document pane

15

16 2b. How to analyze using emergent codes

17 Select text to be coded 2. Right click, Click on “Add Coding” 3. Type code name, Click on “Add”

18 3. How to retrieve quotations for a particular code
Click on the Code icon on the left pane if not already selected Double click on the Code for which you want to retrieve quotations A new box will open to reveal all the quotations coded with the selected code Use to: 1) explore how codes have been applied 2) decide if code needs to be separated into sub-codes 3) decide if code needs to be grouped with other codes into a larger category (axial/analytic code)

19 This column provides info on the document and line number where the quotation appears
Clicking on each row will take you to the quotation in the respective document. Important for seeing context in which quotation exists.

20 4. How to create and link memos to quotations
Memos can be added to your project independently (analytic, methodological, reflective) Memos can be linked to quotations

21 Create new memo 1. Click on + icon, then on “New Memo” 2. Type your text for your memo Title memo here Type memo here

22 Link memo to quotation 1. Make sure Memos icon is selected. 3. Drag Memo to quotation. 2. Select text you want to link memo to. 4. Double-click on memo to view its text

23 5. How to create a few key outputs
Quotations for codes Counts for codes

24 To print QUOTATIONS for a particular CODE
Click on Quotations Manager

25 Click on desired code. You can select multiple codes too.
2. Click on Export icon then on “Export as Report”

26 To print COUNTS for all CODES
Click on Codes Manager

27 Click on Export icon then on “Export as Table”

28 Parting Thoughts Efficiencies in coding Efficiencies in retrieval
Efficiencies in re-coding Efficiencies in pulling evidence One still reads. One still thinks. One still analyzes.
