2 Standard/Objective ELACC6RL3: Describe how a particular story’s plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves towards a resolution. I can…..identify and describe the elements of plot.

3 What is plot? Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another. Simple definition: Plot is what happens in a story!!

8 1. Exposition (Introduction)
Occurs at the beginning of a story Provides details about the characters and setting Gives background information and the basic situation of the story

9 Characters Protagonist Antagonist The main character in a story
Always involved in the main conflict and resolution Usually seen as the “good guy” The character that is against the protagonist Usually seen as the “bad guy”

10 Setting Describes time (when the story takes place) and place (where the story takes place) Location Climate/Weather Mood (atmosphere, surroundings) Social Situation (culture, language, religion, etc)

11 2. Conflict A conflict is a problem that the main character faces
The conflict ties events together to make the plot move forward The conflict is usually introduced early in the rising action of a story

12 3. Rising Action Rising action develops the conflict through a series of events that build interest, suspense, and tension Usually the longest part of a story

13 4. Climax The turning point of the story
The conflict must be faced and action is taken The main character usually changes in some way

14 5. Falling Action The events following the climax
The conflict starts to be wrapped up

15 6. Resolution (Conclusion)
End of the story/the final outcome The conflict is solved

17 Theme The moral or main idea of the story
May be about life, society, or human nature Themes are NOT expressed in a single word, but are a single sentence For example, a theme of the movie Frozen could be “Love is putting someone else’s needs before your own” (as Olaf says) How to Find a Theme
