5 Method Using a spotting tile – take 5 drops of the acid or alkali to be tested Add 3 drops of your chosen indicator Note the colour Repeat for different strengths and different indicators

Indicator Strong acid Weak acid Water Weak alkali Strong alkali Universal Litmus Methyl Orange Phenolphthalein

7 Suitability of indicators
Were all indicators you tested suitable for testing a wide range of items?

8 Practical 2 Take 10cm3 of 0.5M HCl in a small beaker
Add 10 drops of universal indicator Slowly add 0.5M NaOH to the solution. Stop when you have reached neutral and note the volume added
