New Order Holocaust
2
Germany Hitler’s SS, led by Hienrich Himmler, was put in charge of the resettlement. Hitler began to favor emigration for the Jews in Germany, and many Jews who did not want to emigrate were forced to do so by the Nazis. Many countries began to close its doors to Jews because they had taken in so many refugees already.
4
Germany Since emigration was not working to rid Germany of all the Jews, Hitler decided to isolate them. He moved them into ghettos, segregated Jewish areas Poland. These areas were fenced and Jews were locked in to either starve or die of disease.
6
Germany Although the conditions were horrible, the Jews maintained to smuggle food, put on plays and concerts, have secret schools, and keep records of what was happening in the ghettos. The leader of the SS secret service, Reinhard Heydrich, was put in charge of Hitler’s plan of “Final Solution” = genocide, the systematic killing of an entire people.
7
Germany Hitler sent his SS squad to round up all Jews, including men, women, children and babies and ordered them killed. They were taken to concentration camps, slave-labor prisons. In these camps, Jews were forced to work seven days a week, beaten or killed for not working fast enough, and were feed scraps. Many prisoners lost 50 pounds the first month.
8
Germany Nazi’s also built extermination camps equipped with gas chambers. The first extermination camp was in Chelmno, Poland in 1941. The gas chambers could kill as many as 6,000 people a day. There were six death camps in Poland alone.
11
Germany In Auschwitz, the largest of the death camps, prisoners were paraded in front of SS doctors who chose which persons would live and die that day. Those who were chosen to die were mostly women, young children, elderly, and the sick. They were told to undress for a shower, led into a chamber with fake showerheads, locked in, and had cyanide gas pour on them from the showerheads.
15
Germany Later, crematoriums, ovens, were installed to burn the bodies.
17
Germany Six million Jews died in death camps or Nazi massacres.
Less than 4 million Jews survived the Holocaust.
