2 Unit 12: Frequency Tables

3 Vocabulary Frequency Table – a table that shows how often each item occurs in a data set. Tally Mark – a mark used to keep track of data being counted.

4 Reading Frequency Tables
Mrs. Wright wanted to find out the favorite subject of her students. She used a Frequency Table to record her data. How many students does Mrs. Wright have in her class? ANSWER: 50 students How many students chose Math as their favorite subject? ANSWER: 13 students How many more students preferred Science to Math? ANSWER: 4 students How many fewer students preferred Math to English? ANSWER: 7 students.

5 Reading Tally Marks Michelle conducted a survey to find out her friends’ favorite color. She used the Frequency Table below to record her findings. Complete Michelle’s table.

6 Analyzing Frequency Table Data
Use the Frequency Table from the previous slide to help you answer the following questions. 1. How many of Michelle’s friends took part in the survey? Answer: 25 friends 2. How many more friends chose blue as their favorite color than yellow? Answer: 6 friends 3. How many friends chose blue, red or white as their favorite color? Answer: 19 friends

Mrs. Sydney asked her students the number of hours they spend watching television every day. The average number of hours her students spend watching television every day is shown in the following list. Complete the Table

8 Analyzing Frequency Table Data
Use the Frequency Table from the previous slide to help you answer the following questions. 1. How many students responded to Mrs. Sydney? Answer: 30 students 2. How many students spend at least 2 hours watching television per day? Answer: 22 students 3. How many students watch television for more than 3 hours every day? Answer: 4 students

A survey was conducted to find the number of people in each car at a traffic light within 10 minutes. The following list shows the results of the survey. Complete the table.

Use the Frequency Table from the previous slide to help you answer the following questions. How many cars were involved in the survey? ANSWER: 30 cars How many cars had fewer than 3 people in them? ANSWER: 13 cars How many cars had at least 3 people in them? ANSWER: 17 cars What is the total number of people in these cars? ANSWER: 82 people
