3 The belief that an individual's life has been decided for them and there is nothing they can do to change it. No matter what the lovers do, what plans they make, or how much they love each other, their struggles against fate only help fulfil it. It is Romeo and Juliet's determination to struggle against fate in order to be together, whether in life or death, that shows the fiery passion of their love, and which makes that love eternal. People in Elizabethan times were serious believers in Fate, or Destiny, or Fortune – the idea that one’s future was set in stone. Devout Christians never doubted that God controlled every aspect of their lives if He wanted to.
