Foil Boat Activity By Lauren Duderstadt

What is Buoyancy? Buoyancy is the tendency of an object in a fluid to rise or sink due to density differences with its surroundings.

What is Density? Density is the degree of compactness in a substance

What Makes Something Float?
The GIANT RUBBER DUCK weighs 11 TONS so why doesn’t it sink in the water?

Because of DENSITY!!!!! The duck doesn’t sink because it is mostly filled with air which is less dense than water causing it to float

Also, Water has a high surface tension
High surface tension is a property of a liquid(especially water) that allows it to resist an external force, due to the cohesive nature of it’s molecules

Buoyancy Force Gravity puts a downward force on objects in water while the water exerts the opposite force which pushes the matter upward

Archimedes’ principle
The buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

Better Buoyancy Force? + Why?

Boats Notice anything??

Your Task You and a partner will have 30 minutes to create the best foil boat you can to hold the most amount of pennies

Your Supplies Only one foot of aluminum foil!!!

Good Luck and have fun!
