The 2018 NAEA National Convention will be held March in Seattle, Washington at the Washington State Convention Center and Sheraton Seattle Hotel.

To Change the way You Teach

18. Flipping the Classroom for Children with Autism
a session about making videos on ipads to guide students through the steps of making art at their pace. You record yourself teaching the lesson with well-defined steps then allow students to view. They have to watch the entire video once, then they may get their supplies and watch again, stopping when needed. They may also take a picture or many pictures through the process.

19. Creating Self Identity Through Russian Nesting Dolls
The presenter was a college teacher who allowed her students to create a painted nesting dolls using their ideas about themselves. For example, they sketch the innermost doll (the smallest) with a pencil with a drawing of parts of themselves that they don’t show people. The middle would be parts that only their family knows, then the largest is the parts of themselves that everyone knows.

20. Touchstones
We were introduced to Touchstones at our “First Timers” meeting.
The speaker, Michelle Livek introduced this social art project to us and then later in the conference there was an event inviting everyone to make Touchstones.
The basic idea is creating a small piece of art to pass on to another person.
Touchstones are made with round floral beads, collage materials and adhesives.
They are a fun way to spread art in a “courageous moment of kindness”.
