1 Classifying Animals Chapter 19 Lesson 1

2 Aristotle lived from 384-322 B.C.
Aristotle was the first scientist to develop a classification system This system divides living things as plants and animals then subdivides them into land dwellers, water dwellers, and air dwellers.

3 Carolus Linnaeus ( ) Aristotle's naming system was tough to use and complicated. Linnaeus devised th4e seven level classification system that biologists still use today.

4 Seven Levels of Classification
First Level is: Kingdom: This level is for animals.

5 Second Level: Phylum This level is made up of : Arthropoda and Chordata

6 Third Level : is Class This level is made up of Insecta and Mammalia

7 Fourth level is: Order This level is Coleoptera , Proboscidea & Rodentia

8 Fifth Level is: Family This level is Curculionidae, Elephantidae, and Cricetidae

9 Sixth level is : Genus This level is: Anthonomus, Loxodonta, and Phenacomys

10 Seventh Level is: Species
This level is: Grandis, Africana, Longicaudus, and Intermedius

11

12 What the levels mean?? Why do all this.
Every organism has and identification. They all have there own place in the classification system. Some classification groups can contain a large number of species while other groups only have a few species.

13

14 What is that animal called???
Can you tell me what level it belongs to?

15 Scientific Names Scientific names should not be confused with say an animal's common name. This animal's scientific name is Felis concolor An example of this is the mountain lion: which is also known as the puma, cougar, catamount, and American Panther.

16 Why a scientific name? An organism's scientific name consists of two words The first is the organism’s genus The second word is the species label The scientific name given to each species is unique. This means even if they have the same common name they will have a different scientific name.
