1 Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe Dialogue Journal

2 Requirements: On the left side, entitled PASSAGE, jot down quotes, lines, and page references of scenes. (See student example and chart.) On the right side, entitled RESPONSE, make connections, ask questions about what’s happening or what you don’t understand, make interpretations, analyze symbols, and respond to what you’re reading. You will use the focus prompts to guide you. You will need 3 focus for reading passages with responses and 1 personal focus passage with a response for EVERY journal assignment. Each response should be 2-3 sentences long.

3 Example Note Taking Note Making
One this side of the page, write the page numbers and copy the passage or write enough of it so, when you read your journal, it will jog your memory. # 1 p. 2 …so he only gave us half the Novocain. # 2 p. 13 “Poverty doesn’t give you strength or teach you lessons about perseverance. No, poverty only teaches you to be poor. On this side, write your questions, comments, memories, and thoughts about the passage. # 1 What’s up with that? Because they are Native Americans? Because they are poor? I can’t imagine having 10 teeth pulled in one day. This doesn’t seem like how a dentist would behave at all. Aren’t dentists supposed to help people? # 2 Interesting because my mom always talked about growing up poor, like it was something to be proud of. But he is real about it. Being hungry isn’t fun. Not having rent money doesn’t make you strong.

4 Journal Entry # 1 Passage Response
1. “There were certain towel rules that existed in my mother’s world that I just didn’t get. But the rules didn’t stop at towels” (9). What are some of the other rules? I bet it’s important to Ari’s mom that he have clean towels, too. I bet this matters to Ari’s mom because she grew up poor—having nice things is important to her. This shows that Ari doesn’t understand what it was like for his mom as a kid, and maybe doesn’t understand all his mother’s rules or the world’s. 2. 3. 4.
