T L Q strategy These slides are a summary of the lesson that we did on Thursday, November 2, in periods 2, 3, and 4. This lesson was designed to accompany Activity 2.4 in our Springboard text.

Narrative Writing v Explanatory Writing
Has a lead Contains sensory details Transitions are often chronological or spatial Commentary is personal Conclusion often contains reflection Has an intro with a topic sentence (paragraph) or thesis statement (essay) Contains facts and examples Transitions often show comparisons, cause/effect, or examples Commentary shows relevance of details Conclusion echoes topic sentence or thesis statement

Model Explanatory Paragraph using T L Q
Our model explanatory paragraph is about advertising used by the Maybelline cosmetic company to market their mascara called Great Lash. The topic sentence for our paragraph will be: Maybelline uses a variety of advertising techniques to market its Great Lash mascara. Next, we need to add supporting details to show how Maybelline uses a variety of advertising techniques. We are going to use the T L Q strategy to write our supporting details.
4
To prove that Maybelline uses a variety of advertising techniques to market Great Lash mascara, we will tell the reader about some actual ads that Maybelline has used. The first one is below:
5
T = transition L = lead-in Q = quote/paraphrase
The main technique used in this ad is bandwagon (although there is one “fact/figure” with the statistic about one tube being sold every 1.7 seconds). So, we’re going to craft a sentence about this ad using the T L Q format: T = transition L = lead-in Q = quote/paraphrase Since this is the first supporting detail in our paragraph, we’re going to use the transition “for example” to move from our topic sentence into our first example. Then we will use our own words to “lead” the reader into the quote or paraphrased material from the ad. So, our sentence could sound like this: For example, Maybelline uses the bandwagon technique in an ad that says Great Lash is “America’s favorite mascara.”

Model Explanatory Paragraph using TLQ
Now, our model explanatory paragraph looks like this: Maybelline uses a variety of advertising techniques to market its Great Lash mascara. For example, Maybelline uses the bandwagon technique in an ad that says Great Lash is “America’s favorite mascara.” Hmmm. We need more examples to prove that Maybelline uses variety of advertising techniques. Let’s look at two more ads…
7
This ad uses the “testimonial” technique because the woman featured in the ad is Christy Turlington, a well-known supermodel. Using the T L Q strategy, our sentence about this ad might say: In another ad, Maybelline uses the testimonial technique by featuring a picture of Christy Turlington and telling readers that “supermodels” and “make-up pros” use Great Lash.

Model Explanatory Paragraph using TLQ
Our model explanatory paragraph is coming along nicely! Now we’ve written: Maybelline uses a variety of advertising techniques to market its Great Lash mascara. For example, Maybelline uses the bandwagon technique in an ad that says Great Lash is “America’s favorite mascara.” In another ad, Maybelline uses the testimonial technique by featuring a picture of Christy Turlington and telling readers that “supermodels” and “make-up pros” use Great Lash. Having only two different techniques as examples really doesn’t support the word “variety” that we used in our topic sentence. We need one more…
9
This ad uses the “facts and figures” technique
This ad uses the “facts and figures” technique. Since the facts and figures in this ad are hard to read, I will list them below: Lash-doubling formula glides on smoothly to build great-looking lashes Lash-building brush makes it easy to get a full lash look without clumps or globs Contact lens safe Hypoallergenic Washable, available in Waterproof and Curved Brush
10
Using the T L Q strategy, our last example should start with a transition word or phrase. We need to make sure it is a transition that lets the reader know it will be our last example. Hmmm…. How about… In a third advertisement, Maybelline relies on the facts and figures technique to persuade consumers, listing key facts about Great Lash such as that it is “contact lens safe” and “hypoallergenic.”

Model Explanatory Paragraph using TLQ
Check out our model explanatory paragraph now! Maybelline uses a variety of advertising techniques to market its Great Lash mascara. In a third advertisement, Maybelline relies on the facts and figures technique to persuade consumers, listing key facts about Great Lash such as that it is “contact lens safe” and “hypoallergenic.” Now all we need is a concluding sentence, and we’ve got a solid, cohesive paragraph!
