Farmers were hit hard During the war, many farmers borrowed money to purchase land and supplies because it was needed during the conflict After the end of the war, demand decreased causing the prices of farm products to fall Farmers unable to pay back loans States raised taxes Shays’ Rebellion

4 Unable to repay loans and pay taxes, the courts seized the land of the farmers
Daniel Shays, a Massachusetts farmer and veteran, organized an uprising Over 1,000 farmers attacked court houses Federal Government was unable to assist and asked other states to send troops in to stop the rebellion. States refused Massachusetts legislature sent the militia in and stopped the rebellion Shays’ Rebellion

5 Seen as a sign that the Articles of Confederation did not work
May 1787 To prevent further crisis/rebellion, leaders met for a convention in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation A Call for Revision
