Stoning A Rebellious Son To Death
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 (KJV)

Deut.21:18-21 18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: 19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; 20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. 21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

Meaning of stubbornness
The passage starts with man and his responsibility. Raising godly children was always the primary responsibility of the father. Stubborn: Google has two meanings: First is an adjective applied to a person/people as having or showing dogged determination not to change one's attitude or position on something, especially in spite of good arguments or reasons to do so. Adjective applied to things as difficult to move, remove, or cure The middle English uses adjective untamable, meaning not capable of control.

Stubbornness in the bible
Prov. 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. The idiom “ stubborn as a mule.” probably is based on Psalm 32:9 Pharaoh was one good example of stubbornness The nation of Israel was stubborn when they worshipped the golden calf. God was angry to the point of wanting to destroy them completely Deut.9: 14 The Bible consistently teaches that people who remain stubborn experience sudden destruction.

God takes rebellion very seriously
Meaning “resist authority, control, or convention.” This was the sin of Lucifer against God Isaiah 14:12-15 This was the sin of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. Gen. 3 “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.” Hebrews 3:15 Evil people are eager for rebellion, but they will be severely punished. Proverbs 17:11

The agreement Both parents have agreed to discipline the son, but he has refused to obey. Both parents have agreed to bring him to the elders to the gate. Both parents give testimony ( Testimony of two eye witnesses) declare that the son is stubborn, rebellious, glutton and drunkard. This punishment is not for minor misbehavior. This is for a son who is alcoholic, loves to party and is involved in all kinds of immoral and even violent behavior..

The agreement In many ways the life of this son has become a threat to parents and society. The parents themselves were not allowed to kill their own child. This was supposed to be done in consultation with the elders of the town. The death penalty was approved only after investigation and having evidence that was objectively assessed. This was done according to God’s law. ( Devine agreement)

The Bible has no examples of such instances where parents brought their sons and death penalty was given. This shows that the law was effective in preventing such a misbehavior.

The new testament Prodigal son: The father patiently waited for his rebellious son to experience the consequences of his rebellion and come home. Luke 15:11-32 God punished the rebellion of humanity by sending His Son Jesus to pay the penalty.

Conclusion Parents are responsible to raise their children; however, sometimes no matter how hard you work in building character of your children, it does not work. In the Old Testament when a son became threat to the society and to the family the parents were allowed to bring the son to the elders and the elders determined if the death penalty was necessary. No examples of such a incidences are found in the Bible

Conclusion Throughout the Old Testament we consistently see God punishing His children ( Adam and Eve, the nation of Israel) with death penalty for their rebellion against His law. In the New Testament the father of the prodigal son decides to wait until the rebellious child comes home. The Bible tells us that God sacrificed His son for our rebellion. The death penalty for rebellion and stubbornness that we deserved, God took it on Himself. Living in constant rebellion, will result in being disciplined by the heavenly Father. Hebrews 12:5-6
