2 What are motion graphics?
Motion graphics are graphics that use video footage and/or animation technology to create the illusion of motion or rotation, graphics are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects. Motion graphics are usually displayed via electronic media technology, but may be displayed via manual powered technology as well. The term is useful for distinguishing still graphics from graphics with a transforming appearance over time without over-specifying the form.(1) This is the wikipedia definition of motion graphics. Although I wouldn’t normally use wikipedia, I do think it’s a rather good description You are a ninja if you can see this… or the gamma is wrong…

3 Different types of motion graphics
Animation Green Screen/Chromakey Video compositing Particle effects Motion Tracking Here are some of the different types of motion graphics I found out about – you’ll see more about them later

4 Who were the pioneers of motion graphics?
These are two of the early pioneers of motion graphics Saul Bass John Whitney

5 Who is John Whitney? John Whitney was one of the early pioneers of motion graphics. He worked on Psycho with Saul Bass. He spent over 40 years on computer work and developed some specialist equipment for his work. His showreel became a 60’s classic of psychedelia. Read the slide

6 Who is Saul Bass? Again, Saul Bass was an early pioneer of motion graphics. People said that his opening graphics told everyone about the film in the first few seconds. He uses a lot of moving lines in his work and line drawings, together with video manipulation. Read the slide

7 Computer generated motion graphics
An example of computer generated motion graphics is the use of the Red Queen in the Resident Evil film series. Computer generation motion graphics are used to reproduce scenarios of futuristic technology to show The viewer important Background information. Read the slide

8 What are some Types of motion graphics?
Go straight to next slide

9 What are Particle systems
Particle systems are used in film to show things like blood spatters, explosions, snow, floods etc. They can also be used to create images like glowing tails and dust Particles . Read slide then show demo Demo

10 What is video compositing?
Video compositing is where two videos are merged together to make it look like one. The short film series ‘Fear Itself’ is a good example of this. Demo

11 What is Green Screen? Green screen/chromakey is the use of projecting a background onto a single coloured sheet. It is used to create environments that would be impossible to use in real life. One example of this is Knightmare, where the audience are shown bizarre animations which are meant to represent enemies of challenges that the player has to complete.

12 What is motion tracking?
This is where words or signs are used to show movement in a scene. Demo You will buy me a coke zero

13 What is animation? Animation in motion graphics can often be seen in childen’s tv programmes. The effect is often more clearly an animated image rather than something like like ‘Tangled’ Show the british gas advert Demo

14 Good use of motion graphics – sin city
This is one of my favourite films for motion graphics Demo

15 Example 1: sin city GREEN SCREEN: SIN CITY was constantly filmed on a green screen. It’s a fast way to transport people from one location to the next, because the background is digitally imported in. This film has one of the best uses of green screening baring “Tim Burton’s: Alice in Wonderland” because it doesn’t give away any hints that it is shot on a green screen I think that green screen works in this film because you don’t notice the green screen reflections on people because it is in black and white. Also, because this has stayed true to the graphic novels, the backgrounds do not move, so the viewer is more drawn into the acting abilities.

16 An example of a combination of the original graphic novel scene, the green screen from the film and the final image from the film, showing the development of the final film. This is a good example of how the scene was created

17 Motion graphics were used in this film by originally shooting in colour, and then converting to B&W. Certain areas were then re-coloured to add the dynamics and give it a comic book feel. Robert Rodrigues wanted to make Frank Miller’s Sin City because he didn’t want to turn it from a book to a film and lose the effect. In this scene, the female characters eye flash green

18 This scene used a video mask over the actors in order to recreate the scene from the comic book.
Again, I believe that this is a good use of motion graphics because it’s an accurate recreation from the graphic novel.

19 ELEMENTAL EFFECTS: The rain would have been created on something like Adobe After Effects a using particle effect . The thing that pushes this to the edge of realism is that when the rain hits the surface of the flooring, it causes ripples, but when it comes into contact with the dress, no ripples form .

20 Motion graphics were used here to create the Sin City title
Motion graphics were used here to create the Sin City title. It uses an aerial view which is zoomed out from two characters curled up and expands to form the words.
