Censuses in Italy Every 10th year (more or less...), since 1861
Years ending in 1 Long tradition, (relatively) good quality Several questions asked (but not on income, religion, language, infirmity) 2001 edition: virtually all on the WEB (although only in Italian, and not particularly well organized) 30
3
Micro-census data for Italy: 1981
First experience in 1981: 2% sample of private households – i.e. all the members were there, with individual characteristics, their relationships to the reference person and the characteristics of the dwelling (remember: no question on income in the Italian Census). Very good, but never officially recognized 30
4
Micro-census data: 1991 (and 2001)
Second (and currently last) attempt: % sample of individuals, with no household information (but for dimension) and no information on the dwelling (what use?) Virtually all of the info reported in the census form 2001: not ready yet. Most likely the same characteristics as in 1991 30
5
Micro-census data: hopes for the future
Contacts with Istat started to yield results only recently (letter of agreement for use of 1991 dataset) The only worry is that of privacy protection, which should not be much of a problem once familiarity with IPUMs is established (There may be an additional, technical difficulty, if new sample extraction needed) 30
