Founding… Was Created in 1906

PURPOSE The FDA also enforces other laws, many of which are not directly related to food or drugs. Including: sanitation requirements on interstate travel and control of disease on products ranging from certain household pets to sperm donation for assisted reproduction.

OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation of: Food Drugs Vaccines Dietary Supplements Tobacco Veterinary Products Cosmetics Pharmaceuticals

LEADERSHIP The FDA is led by the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate

The agency has 223 field offices and 13 laboratories located throughout the 50 states, the United States Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. 2008, the FDA started opening offices in foreign countries, including China, India, Costa Rica, Chile, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

REGULATION The FDA regulates more than $1 trillion worth of consumer goods, about 25% of consumer expenditures in the United States.

Potential Criticism… The organization typically views products politically rather than an economic or safety standpoint They tend favor larger corporations over the smaller Also, there is a lot of existing debate within the FDA regarding untested illegal drugs People in the United States in dire situation especially with low survival rates of cancer often find little help with the drugs that are 100% safe With this in mind, people are desperate for a solution to their illness even if it mean death because it was already the enviable Also with other illegal drugs, most of the studies they view are typically from years ago, which often misconstrues the decision that is made
