When we analyze something, we look for:
Our reaction to the “whole”; What the constituent elements are that make up the whole; How those elements work to shape our reactions

Verbs to describe function:
Example: The uniformity of the lines implies a standardization or conformity. Evokes elicits manipulates alludes to twists Ignites suggests hints at creates depicts Conveys conjures up juxtaposes portrays maintains Implies connotes explains elucidates emphasizes Changes alters paints produces stirs enhances

Take a look at the piece of artwork and think about the constituent pieces. What are you looking at? Examine light, shape, background, and foreground. #1 w/out music. What is Picasso trying to convey? How does he do it? Why is her head bent back? What about the lines? Why are they jagged? What’s the effect? Why end on the flower? Etc.? #2 Listen with the music on. How does this change your reaction with the music? Other thoughts? How do the elements help convey Picasso’s point?
