3 Background of the Advertisement
Product being advertised: Alka-Seltzer, a pain reliever for heartburn and indigestion. Length of the advertisement: one minute. The plot: The commercial starts off as advertisement for a fictional product called Magdalini’s Meatballs, and the actor has to take a bite then talk to the camera in an italian accent. Each and every take, the actor messes up somehow. In the end he took so many bites of the spicy meatballs which caused him a stomachache, and that’s Alka-Seltzer comes to the rescue! The actor feels like himself again and this time he does a perfect take! Then the oven door falls off.. Demographics of the buyers: Anyone at any age who might suffer from heartburn, indigestion, or stomachaches.

5 Persuasion Tactics Use of memorable humor that is also relevant to the product being sold. Mention of what the customer might gain from the product “Alka-seltzer can help unstuff you, relieve the acid indigestion, and help make you your old self again.”

6 Effectiveness I think the use of humor is really what made this somewhat boring product so memorable. Now I have Alka-seltzer in mind every time I eat meatball spaghetti! Was it effective? I do think so, yes. Mostly because of the use of relevant humor. But also how they cleverly displayed it as a rescuer of any stuffiness a person might get from overeating.
