Knowledge IS Power
Speak the “same language”/ lingo
Carry Regulation “cheat sheets” to reference, learn, understand
2.) Always be ready/prepared to be inspected
Have your documents ready and together
Driver’s License
Vehicle Registration
Proof of Insurance
Medical Card
Annual/Periodic Inspection Report for each unit
Bills of Lading/Shipping Documents (if any)
Log Book (CURRENT TO LAST CHANGE OF DUTY STATUS)
Supporting Documents/Receipts

3.) Complete thorough Pre-trip and Post-trip Inspections
While completing the Pre-trip Inspection, imagine yourself as the inspector; what violations would you find?
If you find violations during the Pre-trip Inspection, GET THEM REPAIRED BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE YARD!
Never assume that because you drove the vehicle last (and completed the Post-trip Inspection) that a thorough Pre-trip Inspection is not required!
You are responsible for the condition of your truck and any trailers you pull!

4) Practice Safe Driving Habits
Speed limit or below (allow extra time in your route planning)
Following distance (3 second rule + EXTRA distance for trailer attached)
Slower traffic Keep Right (stay in the “slow lane”)
Lane changes (in metropolitan areas, allow 1 mile for each lane change and only if absolutely necessary)
Move Over law (if unable to change lanes, slow down when passing)
Slow down when approaching green traffic lights, anticipate yellow (watch for pedestrian sign count down)
Cell phone calls / texting while driving are PROHIBITED
ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELT!

5) Be Respectful and Professional
Set the tone for the entire inspection
“You are just doing your job, and they are just doing their job”
Be honest – nobody likes a liar
Be tactful in disagreements
Keep a current copy of the FMCSRs and CVSA OOS in the vehicle for reference
Regardless of the inspection outcome, thank them and offer a hand shake (though they most likely will decline)
Build a GREAT reputation for yourself and your company!
