3 Resume Purpose The resume acts as a door opener for a job interview
Allows the employer to quickly assess your qualifications when screening applicants Much effort needs to be spent on preparing an excellent resume Remember: You may only get one chance at an interview.

4 Resume Facts The average resume is read in about 30 seconds
No more then 2 pages in length is recommended if second page has less than 50% then try to fit on 1 page A resume is usually discarded due to unprofessional wording (example using an spelling, grammatical and/or formatting errors Set up an for your job applications! Check all of your wording over carefully!

6 Job Objective Gives the employer of job that you are interested in applying for Remember to phase the statement in terms of what you can do for the employer not what you want them to do for you (example of improper statement: I need a summer job to buy myself a new IPod.) Example: Objective: I am interested in providing customer service to patrons in the food service industry.

7 Summary of Skills Locate this part on the resume following the objective statement Do not write this part of the resume until the rest of the resume is completed Its purpose is to provide the reader with specific statements about your qualifications 3 to 6 points maximum Example: computer proficiency includes word processing and using spreadsheets coached and motivated players on a minor hockey team supervised and prepared food for children ages 5-10

8 Education State the year that you entered high school and then add present State candidate for Ontario Secondary School Diploma and your Secondary School List any relevant courses relate to the job that you are applying for Example: 2006-present Candidate for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma Bramalea Secondary School, Brampton, Ontario Relevant Courses: English, Math, Business

9 Experiences and Accomplishments
If this section is quite extensive then place before education Types of Experience and Accomplishments may include: Work Experience Volunteer Experience Personal Accomplishments Example: 2007-present Volunteer - Bramalea Secondary School, Brampton - assisted with child care services Volunteer – Clark Boulevard Public School, Brampton - worked with younger students to foster their reading development

10 Awards/Activities/Interests
State name of the award and where you received it from School organizations and activities Hobbies, sports and other leisure activities Example: Most Valuable Player for the High School football team Play indoor soccer in community recreational league Paint nature pictures using oil and acrylic paints Collect national and international stamps

11 References State “References Available Upon Request” at bottom of resume Do not list your references on the resume but rather provide them at the interview Usually 3 references is sufficient Do not use relatives or family members rather use people that you have worked for in either a paid or volunteer position Contact your references for permission to use them
