Ch. 9 lesson 2 objectives Explain the roles of stress tolerance and personality in determining a person’s level of stress Identify common stress-induced illnesses Describe the signs of stress

Stress and the brain Neurotransmitters – Brain chemicals, stress causes an imbalance among these chemicals causing sleep loss, panic attacks, lack of energy, depression.

Stress and personality type
Type A - Competitive, high achieving. Most likely to develop heart disease. May relieve stress by working. Type B – Laid back, non-competitive. Less likely to develop heart disease. If not active, may hold on to stress.

Hardy personality – Stays healthy despite stressors. Are resilient and share 3 characteristics: - Change - Commitment - Control (some things can’t be controlled)

Stress & mind-body connection
High blood pressure – Increase levels of cholesterol contributing to heart disease. Headaches – Stressed head and neck muscles.

Asthma - Stress can trigger an attack. Immune response – Stress depletes the immune system, prone to colds, flu, infections.

Signs of stress Physical – Headaches, upset stomach, inc HR, sore muscles, trouble sleeping. Emotional – Quick to become angry, frustrated, impatient, moody, lonely.

Signs of stress (cont) Mental – Trouble reading, constant worry, can’t make a decision, loss of sense of humor. Behavioral – Not eating, overeating, drug use, reckless behavior.
