1 A2 Media Music Video Project
Evaluation Katie Dyson Sophie Norman Chloe Dyson

2 What went well? Before filming we created a schedule in which we booked the rooms we needed and made sure that our actors were available. We had a three hour slot in the drama studio in which we filmed our performance scene, we were able to use studio lights and a white backdrop to make the scene conform to our genre. We were also able to gather all of the equipment we needed, such as guitars and a drum kit as they were all available to us from the music department. Whilst filming we used two high quality cameras, so that we could capture the establishing shots and close ups at the same time. Therefore whilst editing we could use a match cut, so that the fluidity of the editing continued throughout the video. Chloe and Sophie filmed whilst Katie acted as part of the band, however Katie filmed the narrative section of our video.

3 Whilst editing we were easily able to complete our lip sync as our chosen song had a steady beat, which made it easy to edit to the beat. We made sure that we filmed a large amount of close up shots of the lead singer singing, so that whilst editing we could select the best ones as we had a large amount of footage available to us. We also made sure that we got lots of close up shots of instruments being played, as that is a typical convention of our genre. We learnt this whilst carrying out our preliminary research as we did a shot by shot analysis of a music video from our chosen genre. Whilst filming our performance scenes we were able to use a “dolly” so that we could create interesting camera movement, without the shakiness.

4 Using genre conventions
We made sure that we chose performance students to act as our boy band as we knew that they would be reliable, and perform the song realistically with a lot of energy. Our actors also play guitars so they were able to learn the chords to our song, and play properly. This made the overall performance look much more realistic, and we were able to capture close ups of guitar playing which fitted with the song correctly. Whilst filming the narrative section of our video in a forest, we checked the weather beforehand as we wanted it to be sunny to ensure good lighting and a positive tone, to coincide with the uplifting storyline. We made sure that all of our actors were dressed appropriately so that they suited our genre, for example our boyband were wearing checked shirts in hazy colours to reinforce the relaxed atmosphere of the genre.

5 What was challenging? We had some issues with the editing software we were using (Adobe Premier Pro) because for unknown reasons every clip we imported lagged, meaning we had to receive help from the IT technicians. They managed to temporarily fix the problem by using a hard drive to import our footage. Some of our files were missing, however using a hard drive allowed us to fix this problem. Whilst filming we initially didn’t use a tripod whilst filming our narrative scenes as we wanted to follow the actors whilst they were walking, however this proved to cause some issues with shakiness as the camera was very unsteady. Therefore we decided to use a tripod to film the rest of our footage so that it wasn’t as shaky.

6 We found it hard to relate our narrative to the lyrics as they are about a couple who have been in a controlling relationship, which ended with the girl leaving because she didn’t like being controlled by her partner, the line “I won't go and tell you how to live your life” shows him begging for her forgiveness and saying that he will change therefore we decided to show them getting back together, as the song sounds uplifting we wanted to show the positive side of their relationship.

7 Audience feedback Before exporting our finished music video we asked for some audience feedback, so that we could make any changes if necessary. We showed our video to about 20 people from our target audience (young adults aged between 16 and 24) and asked them to complete a survey. POSTIVE FEEDBACK: Edited well to the beat and the lip sync is accurate. Good variety of camera shots, for example close up and establishing shots. Actors fitted the genre of ‘indie-folk’ as they were dressed appropriately and played instruments from our chosen genre. CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Parts of the performance shots were not always in full focus. The camera was slightly shaky during some narrative scenes. More close ups of specific band members were needed. After looking at the negative feedback we re edited some of the out of focus and shaky parts to make the overall video look professional.

8 Technologies we used Adobe Premier Pro
The WordPress website and mobile app – allowed us to update our blogs regularly Studio lighting – made our performance scene look professional Adobe Premier Pro DSLR 3200 Cameras allowed us to capture high quality footage. Technologies we used YouTube – This allowed us to distribute our video to gain views and advertise the band. Social media (Twitter and Facebook) to contact the band Microsoft Word and Power point – This software helped us with our evaluation and filming schedules. Web 2.0 – allowed us to research our genre.

9 Ancillary tasks All the elements of our digipack and magazine advert match each other, as we used the same images, font and colour scheme so that the CD cover and magazine advert relate. We used our production company logo and quotes from some of the songs to make the album seem ‘personal’ and ‘light hearted’ so that the overall package follows the conventions of the indie folk genre. Our digipack follows the conventions of a professional digipack by including the release date, star rating, and the name of the band.

10 Distribution As our audience is young people, aged between 16 and 24, the internet would be our first choice for distribution. We can use sites like YouTube and Spotify to present our video as it is easy to upload and allows the audience easy access to the video.
