Infer & Retrieve 8 – 9 Innovative You Identify evidence from the text to support a range of considered/thoughtful points. The evidence is mostly precise. 6 - 7 Mastering Your evidence from the text is well-chosen to accurately support well-made points. 4 - 5 Competent You Identify evidence to support clear points made. The evidence is mostly relevant. 2 – 3 Developing You can find quotations or parts of the text to support your comments. These are not always right. < 2 Foundation You can find basic information from the text. Sometimes the information isn’t focused on the comments you are making though. Explain & Interpret 8 - 9 You offer a developed exploration of relevant ideas. You draw on secure evidence to begin to interpret meaning. You explain ideas which are relevant and in detail. You clearly draw on evidence to identify layers of meaning. You explain ideas clearly and competently. You use evidence to identify clear meaning. 2 - 3 You begin to comment on ideas. You begin to draw on evidence when commenting on ideas. You make straightforward comments, but these are not usually connected to evidence in the text. Analyse You explain in detail the effects of language/structure/form and how the writer uses these to create specific effects. You use accurate terminology. 6 – 7 You explain the effects of language/structure/form and the effect these have on the reader. You use mostly appropriate terminology. 4 – 5 You identify features of language/structure/form and comment on the effects of these. You use some correct terminology. You identify some things about style, the ways writers use language and organise their writing. You might only offer a little comment about these. You begin to recognise writing style, how writing is organised and some of the ways writers use language. Comparing/Judgement 8 - 9 Innovative You offer developed and thoughtful links within and/or between texts. You begin to offer an evaluative comment on the writer’s ideas across the text. You identify relevant contextual evidence to show a wider knowledge of the text. 6 - 7 Mastering You confidently make links within and/or between texts. You identify the writer’s ideas from across the text. You identify some relevant contextual evidence to show a wider knowledge of the text. 4 - 5 Competent You make clear links within and/or between texts You identify the main purpose/ideas of the writer. You identify general contextual knowledge and apply this to ideas. 2 - 3 Developing You begin to make connections between different parts in a text, or between another text. These links might be simple and limited. You begin to identify the writer’s view. You recognise some things about how when and where the text was written could be important. < 2 Foundation You try to make connections between different parts of a text, or between another text. These links are not always clear. You are aware of the writer having a point of view. You have some general ideas about when and where the text was written.
