1
Lesson Objective: You will be able to differentiate between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.
2
With your partner, take a look at your Eukaryotic/Prokaryotic cells and jot down three differences you notice. Sheets of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are at each student’s desk. In partners, I have them examine them and come up with differences that they notice between them.
3
What is the main difference between a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell?
4
Prokaryotic Cells: Does not have a nucleus! Called “prokaryote”.
Bacteria cells.
5
Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells Bacterial cells
Does not have a nucleus!
6
Eukaryotic Cells: Has a nucleus! Called “eukaryote”.
Plant and animal cells.
7
Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells Bacterial cells
Does not have a nucleus! Plant and animal cells Has a nucleus!
8
What is a “nucleus”?
9
Nucleus: Center of a cell that contains important information!
10
Which do you think are larger, prokaryotic cells or eukaryotic cells?
11
Size: Eukaryotic cells are for the most part larger than Prokaryotic cells.
12
Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells Bacterial cells
Does not have a nucleus! Smaller Plant and animal cells Has a nucleus! Larger
13
Prokaryotic Cells: Defined by their shape! Classified as either:
1. Rod 2. Spherical 3. Spiral
14
Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells Bacterial cells
Does not have a nucleus! Smaller Defined by their shape Plant and animal cells Has a nucleus! Larger
15
What are “genes”?
16
Genes: Genes hold the information to build and maintain cells through DNA. They are codes that effect how an organism looks! Each physical trait has its own gene. An organism’s “DNA” is all of its’ genes!
17
Genes Examples: Eye color. Hair color. Blood type. Height. Diseases.
18
Hair Color: World’s Population: 70% black hair. 25% brown hair.
4% blonde hair. 1% red hair.
19
Eukaryotic Cells: DNA is stored in the nucleus!
20
Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells Bacterial cells
Does not have a nucleus! Smaller Defined by their shape Plant and animal cells Has a nucleus! Larger DNA stored in Nucelus
21
Prokaryotic Cells: DNA is located throughout the cell!
22
Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells Plant and animal cells
Bacterial cells Does not have a nucleus! Smaller Defined by their shape DNA is located throughout the cell Plant and animal cells Has a nucleus! Larger DNA stored in Nucleus
23
Draw a picture of a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell at the bottom of your notes.
24
Fold your paper in half and glue it into the next available page in your notebook.
25
Pro, No. Eu, Do. Prokaryotic cells have NO NUCLEUS, Eukaryotic cells DO HAVE A NUCLEUS.
26
Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?
30
Which of the following is true of the cell below?
A – It must be prokaryotic because it has DNA. B – It must be eukaryotic because it has DNA. C – It must be prokaryotic because it has a nucleus. D – It must be eukaryotic because it has a nucleus.
31
Which statement is false?
A – Eukaryotic cells are larger than prokaryotic cells. B – Prokaryotic cells are larger than eukaryotic cells. C – Plants are made up of eukaryotic cells. D – Bacteria is prokaryotic.
