6 Print on Demand and the wholesaler model
Virtual stock is a challenge for the traditional wholesaler Many titles now do not exist until someone wants a copy Nothing in stock usually means no sale/no backorders Nothing in stock tells the bookseller “long lead time, mate…” Nothing in stock does not look great Don’t bother? = lost sales, declining offer to the market Carry stock? = cash tied up in speculative stock Install your own POD? = have plenty of money ready… Integrate with POD suppliers? = most likely option Message to market has to reflect the reality of the POD supply chain

7 Print on Demand and the distributor model: same lessons…

12 Unlocking the Global Supply Chain: a few completely unbiased tips…
Review your complete global supply chain Using an in market distributor? Review their messaging to the market for your titles that they don’t have on hand How are they representing POD titles? Are they integrated with your POD supplier in the market? Are you shipping titles that could be put into POD for the local market Not using an in market distributor? How are your books reaching the market? Can you use POD to add a local wholesale supply option?
