October 13th: In-class essay on the question: Using GET PAST, explain what causes civilizations to rise and fall? Unit Test - October 16th OR October 20th Essential Question: What causes civilizations to rise and fall?

15 Athenian Democracy vs Spartan Oligarchy
Find someone with a similar suit. Answer the question: What were two strengths of Athenian democracy and two strengths of Spartan oligarchy? What were two weaknesses of democracy and two weaknesses of Spartan oligarchy?

16 Spartan Oligarchy - small group of ppl that rules
Strengths Election of officials women considered citizens focus on military leads to conquering and staying isolated from other cultures wisest and oldest run for office more efficient cuz of few voices Weaknesses voting by screaming = dumb, inefficient wealth = power only a few actually make laws no competition from youth, leading to all old males in office no freedom of speech

17 Athenian Democracy Strengths Weaknesses ALL Citizens had a say in laws
Power based on ability not wealth Open to diff opinions In favor of majority (developed a consensus) Weaknesses Randomly chosen council members (don’t know what you are going to get in a govt official) inefficient and takes 4eva to make decisions, yo only males were citizens, no opinions from women and slaves early on, power based on class, but this changed over time Minorities drool

18 What role should the spiritual world play in our government?

19 Hippocrates: The Sacred Disease
We will read excerpts from The Sacred Disease as a class The “sacred disease” is epilepsy, believed to be from the gods Hippocrates disagrees On your own, read your assigned paragraph and find evidence that supports Hippocrates argument.

Evidence:

Socrates: Because it is pious or holy, or for some other reason? Euthyphro: No, that is the reason. Socrates: It is loved because it is holy, not holy because it is loved?
