Topographic Maps
2
Topographic Maps Show surface features or topography of the earth
Show both natural features and man-made features Example: Mountains and Roads
6
Definitions Contour lines – connect points of equal elevation
Contour interval difference in elevation between two contour lines (subtract) Index contours are bolder for reference (every 5th line)
7
Index Contour
8
Line Spacing Contour lines wide = land is flat
Contour lines close = land is steep Important Symbols Depression Contour (“Jabba the Hut symbol”) – shows holes or wells, or volcano pits 2) Plus Sign – Mountain Top or Highest Point
10
How do we create a topographic map??
Elevation = 115 ft Sea Level Elevation = 0 ft
11
20 ft
12
Depression Contour Lines – indicate a decrease in elevation
What happens to elevation in the center of a volcano? Elevation decreases Depression Contour Lines – indicate a decrease in elevation
13
Streams What shape is made with the contour lines when a stream is present? upstream “V” Shape How do you know which way the stream flows? The bottom of the “V” shape points upstream
14
Shows the change in elevation of the land surface from the side view.
Topographic Profiles DEFINITION Shows the change in elevation of the land surface from the side view. Must do the top view before the profile.
17
What can you tell me about this map?

Questions for Review What is a topographic map and what does it show?
What is a contour line? What is a contour interval? What is an index contour? How can we show the difference between a mountain top and a volcano pit? How can we show flat land vs. a steep slope?
