The speech intelligibility of each subject who used no sensory aid (NA-AA and NA-AB) was only 3%. Thus, the intelligibility of these 2 subjects’ speech 5 years after they became deaf (at age 5) was no better than that of subjects with congenital deafness or deafness acquired during the first few years of life (Figure 4).
