Who is a refugee?

A refugee is someone who has been forced to leave his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so.

UNHCR – The United Nations Refugee Agency

Who is a migrant?

Migrants choose to move not because of a direct threat of persecution or death, but mainly to improve their lives by finding work, or in some cases for education, family reunion, or other reasons. Unlike refugees who cannot safely return home, migrants don’t face the same fear. If they choose to return home, they will continue to receive the protection of their government.
