1 FACULTY OF ARTS & SOCIAL SCIENCES
NUS GLOBAL STUDIES 2015 Cohort FACULTY OF ARTS & SOCIAL SCIENCES

2 OVERALL VIEW HONOURS BACHELORS
100 MCS OF MAJOR MODULES + 16 MCS OF LANGUAGE* BACHELORS 60 MCS OF MAJOR MODULES + 16 MCS OF LANGUAGE* * Language requirement is to be fulfilled using non-major modular credits (MC) that are traditionally called ‘unrestricted electives – UE’. Students normally have have 28 MCs of Unrestricted Electives (UE). Because of language, GL students thus have 12 MCs.

3 An Example of What Goes into an Honours Degree.
*Students on different schemes (MTBS/USP/Double Degree/Second Major) will have to check the modular paper for the requirements. University Level Requirements General Education (20 MCs) Faculty Exposure (12 MCs) Major Honours (100 MCs) Level 1-3 – 4MCs each and L4-L5 – 5 MCs each (with the exception of LKY SPP modules which are at 4 MCs) Unrestricted Electives (UE) (28 MCs) Human Culture (GEH) Social Sciences CORE (30MCs): Language Quantitative Reasoning (GER) Humanities GL1101E GL2101 GL2102 GL2103 GL3101 GL4101 GL4102 Thinking and Expression (GET) Asian Studies Singapore Studies (GES) One more GEH/GER/GET/GES ELECTIVES (70MCs): UE 16 MCs in Theme 16 MCs in Region 38 MCs from any theme or region 60 MCs must be at L3 and above. Of which at least 40 MCs must be at L4 (includes Core Modules). No more than 50% of the electives can come from a single subject (e.g. Sociology or Political Science).

4 Progression for JC and Poly Students: Students should be aware that there are criteria to be met before they can be promoted to the next level. Your status also determines the level of modules you can access. For a JC student a typical progression is represented in Table A (please note that not all the core modules are listed below). Students from the polytechnic have a bit more of shuffling to do with their modules as they would have received 20MCs of Advanced Placement Credits (APC) and would be in advance to their JC peers by a semester. Poly students should refer to Table B on when the core modules (not all are listed below) should be read. TABLE A Sem 1 Sem 2 Promotion to ARS2 - accumulated 40MCs Sem 3 Sem 4 Promotion to ARS3 - accumulated 80MCs Sem 5 Sem 6 Promotion to ARS3 - accumulated 110MCs, 60MCs of major modules and CAP of 3.2 Sem 7 Sem 8 GL1101E GL3101 GL4101 GL4102 ARS1 20MCs ARS1 40MCs ARS2 60MCs 80MCs ARS3 100MCs 120MCs ARS4 140MCs 160MCs When students go on exchange they are ‘pseudo’ promoted to enable their participation in MPE and bidding in CORS. But if students fall short by more than 20MCs they will realise that they are greatly disadvantaged. Higher level languages are not offered every semester. So do plan ahead – especially if you are going on exchange. The workload requirements may dwindle down for poly graduates as such it would be good to work out the Detailed Schedule (available on the GL website) so that if the Dean’s Office makes a call you are prepared to defend why you are reading less than the minimum workload. TABLE B Sem 1 Sem 2 Sem 3 Sem 4 Sem 5 Sem 6 Sem 7 Graduate at the end of Sem 7 GL1101E GL3101 GL4101 GL4102 ARS1 40MCs ARS2 60MCs ARS2 80MCs ARS3 100MCs 120MCs ARS4 140MCs 160MCs

5 GL1101E (20 MCs) GL2101 GL2102 GL2103 GL3101 THEME: GHE (16 MCs) L2000 (Sociology) L3000 (Sociology) L3000 (Political Science) L3000 (Geography) REGION: SEA (16 MCs) L2000 (Geography) L2000 (Southeast Asian Studies) L3000 (Southeast Asian Studies) ELECTIVES WITHIN THE MAJOR (8 MCs) HONOURS (40 MCs) GL4101 GL4102 L4 Good spread of L2 and L3. Minimum of 20MCs at L3000. An Example A student pursuing the following combination who plans to do honours: Global Health & Environment (GHE) Southeast Asia (SEA) German (16 MCs of Language fulfilled using modular credits from the Unrestricted Electives) Not more than 50% of your electives can be from a single subject. Minimum of 40MCs must be at L4000

6 Classify modules every semester in the Graduation Academic Planning System so that you are able to track your progress. Plan, plan, plan – GL involves a lot of planning. Participate in the Module Preference Exercise to have your major modules pre- allocated to you where possible especially the language module. Students on LPP need not select language during MPE. Students intending to go on exchange should be aware of the MC Exchange Ratio of the Partner University. Students can exercise the S/U option on their language. Do note that those pursuing a minor which requires language would have to be careful about exercising the S/U option. Tips Know which subjects (PS, HY, GE, NM or etc.) are more prominent in your Theme or Region and use the Faculty Exposure Requirement to fulfill the exposure modules. In this way you don’t have to worry about fulfilling the exposure requirement for higher level modules.
