Why Research? To whom it may concern: Scholarship for higher studies Getting a better job Personal interest Background (Sharing My Real-World Experience) On January 2008; when I passed-out from BUET: No such online/ Facebook activities or career workshop Someone said my CGPA is not high, therefore, I need some reinforcement (e.g. Publications)!! I don’t have a single publication???

Publishing an Article = The Right Way
Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) >>> Thomson Reuters Corporation
7
ISI Journal Article Finally, after 5 long years; I managed to publish an ISI Journal
8
Journal Ranking IMPACT FACTOR (IF) Calculation for five-year impact factor: One year of citations to five years of articles. A= citations in 2013 to articles published in [= 400] B= articles published in [= 200] C= A/B = five-year impact factor [= 400/200 = 2] ** Nature (IF = 51) ** Science (IF = 48)
9
Journal Ranking Quartile Rankings Q1 denotes the top 25% of the IF distribution Q2 for middle-high position (between top 50% and top 25%) Q3 middle-low position (top 75% to top 50%), and Q4 the lowest position (bottom 25% of the IF distribution) ** This ranking is based on subject category! ** According to the newly released 2013 Journal Citation Reports® Science Edition (Thomson Reuters, 2014), the new 5-Year Impact Factor for Remote Sensing is Now it ranks 6/27 (Q1) in the category ‘Remote Sensing’. *** Does it frustrate you? IF of a journal can widely-vary based on different subject categories!
10
Researcher Ranking In general, total number of citations defines a researcher!
11
Some Tips If you fail to publish in an ISI journal; what’s next: National well recognized journals (e.g. IEB, BIP, IAB) Conference proceedings and presentations Workshops and Research reports Internationally Recognized Organizations/ Agencies (e.g. BRAC, NASA, USAID, ISPRS etc) * Bangladesh related ISI journals (e.g. BANGLADESH JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH); 45 years on publishing journals! ** Try to find well-recognized publishers = Springer, Elsevier, Wiley etc. ** Remember: All Springer Journals are not ISI recognized
12
What is a Research Proposal?
A research proposal is a document of usually three to seven pages that informs others of a proposed piece of research. The purpose of the proposal is to help you to focus and define your research plans.
13
Client’s Satisfaction! Client = Supervisor or Funding Agency
Every proposal scans for clear answers to three questions: What are we going to learn that we do not know now? Why it is worth knowing? How will we know that the conclusions are valid? ** Follow the Research Interests or Instructions (ToR)!
14
Structure of a Proposal
Title and Affiliation Background/ Problem Identification Objectives Literature Review and Research Gaps Significance/ New Knowledge Methodology Timeframe Appendices References
15
Publishing in an ISI Journal
First choose the appropriate journal from the master list Prepare a manuscript as per the guidelines Submit via Online Portal Wait for the initial comments from the Editor If rejected; try another journal! If accepted for the next stage, then wait for the reviewers comments (2-3 reviewers) Reviewers can either reject or ask for major/minor revisions!
