RESPIRATION IN PLANTS Christina Lau, Yscilla Sjauw, Kathleen Chan Year 8 Trust

2 DO PLANTS EATS? Yes Plants produce starch and other chemicals through photosynthesis Photosynthesis – CO2 + H2O + Light => C6H12O6 + O2 Photosynthesis occurs in chlorophyll, a part of a plant cell The chemicals are stored as glucose, or sugar

3 DO PLANTS DRINK? Yes Plants need water for photosynthesis
Plants also need water for support, as water helps to maintain a plant’s structure Water acts as a solvent in plants, and helps plants to absorb the minerals in the soil

4 DO PLANTS BREATHE? Not exactly
Photosynthesis: Absorbs CO2 and give out O2 Respiration: Absorbs O2 and give out CO2 Daytime – Photosynthesis – more O2 produced Nighttime – Respiration – more CO2 produced Half-light – Equal – same amount of CO2 and O2

5 DO PLANTS HAVE BABIES? Yes Male part: stamen; female part: pistil
The stamen has an anther on a stalk; it produces pollen The pistil contains the ovary, the style, and the stigma. The ovules in the ovary contain egg cells. When an egg cell joins a pollen cell, a seed is formed. The ovary becomes a fruit.
