Palliative care in acute care
At present, palliative care programs have been established at more than 60 percent of U.S. hospitals with more than fifty beds and affect approximately 1.5 percent of all discharges. Palliative care is estimated to save $1.2 billion per year under the current penetration of services (to approximately 1.5 percent of all hospital discharges at 1,500 U.S. hospitals). This figure would increase to approximately $4 billion per year if capacity were expanded to meet the needs of 6 percent of hospital discharges at 90 percent of all U.S. hospitals with more than fifty beds Increased Access to Palliative Care and Hospice Services: Opportunities to Improve Value in Health Care Diane E Meier © 2017 Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah, all rights reserved.
