High density of cigarette sale outlets around schools
Types of sale outlets: Push carts, kiosks, supermarkets, convenience stores, coffee shop Sale of single cigarettes Almost all sale points of cigarettes sell single sticks (stores, push carts, kiosks, etc). This increases affordability of cigarettes and facilitates experimentation/initiation Sale of flavoured cigarettes Encourages experimentation/initiation and gives the impression that they are safer to use Advertising and promotion Outdoor advertising (Structures or buildings, sidewalks of stores, umbrellas, windows or doors of stores, ) and indoor advertising (display on the counter, display behind the counter, display of non-tobacco products with cigarettes) Non-compliance with existing laws All provisions related to marketing to children in the laws are violated by the tobacco companies Benin, Nigeria: Ban sale of single cigarettes Benin, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Uganda: Ban sale to minors Nigeria, Uganda: Ban advertising and promotion Cameroon: Ban outdoor advertising

OUTCOMES

CAMEROON: New legislation being drafted on advertising/promotion of tobacco products around schools BURKINA FASO: Decree issued banning promotion of tobacco products 400 meters around schools. UGANDA: Members of Parliament visit schools’ vicinity for TC Act enforcement BENIN: Law adopted banning advertising, sale and promotion of tobacco products 500 meters around educational institutions. NIGERIA: Advocacy continues with Government to enforce ban on sale and advertising of tobacco around schools.
