4 The many uses of fluids. A fluid is anything that has no fixed shape and can flow.

5 Fluids are very useful…
Make it easier to transport, process and use different kinds of materials, even if the materials are solids.

6 Slurries A mixture of water & solids is called a slurry.

7 Slurry technology is important…
In many ways: Oil sands… Syncrude, largest producer of oil sands, used to use conveyer belts to move oils sands from the mine to the processing plant. Very expensive! Now they create oil-sand slurry at the mine site and pumps the slurry through pipelines to the processing plant.

9 Fluids Become Solids Fluids are easy to move & take the shape of their container. Because of these properties, many of the things we see and use as solids were originally prepared as fluids. Can you think of any?

11 Glass is made by heating a mixture of sand, limestone, and other carbonates. Substances are added to give it colour or special qualities. Mixture is heated in a furnace until 1000 degrees C Then the liquid is shaped into the form needed, such as bottles, windows, or fibre-optic strands.

12 Steel is another example of the use of fluids as a stage in processing materials.
Steel is made of a mixture of iron, carbon, and small amounts of other substances. The material is heated to 1650 degrees C… The liquid steel is then shaped into the desired forms and cooled.

15 Useful Properties of Fluids
By understanding the properties of fluids, people can design technological devices that use these properties. The properties we will be learning about include: viscosity, density, buoyancy, and compressibility. When people understand fluids’ properties, it helps them in choosing and using fluids for different applications (purposes).

16 Your bike starts to make grinding noises…
Use oil to make sure that the parts operate smoothly together… Viscosity.

17 When making maple syrup…
You have to know when the mixture reaches the right concentration of sugar… You use a device called a hydometer to measure the density of the syrup.

18 Ships float… Because of the buoyant force of water acting on it.

19 Hovercrafts… Operate by directing air downward so it floats on a fluid cushion over the waves.

20 Systems that use compressed air…
Are called pneumatic systems. Hydraulic systems use liquids to lift or move things. This jackhammer is pneumatic.

21 Activity In this activity you will observe a situation that uses two liquids- detergent & water. Work in groups of 4. You will have a pan of water with some pepper floating on it. Add a couple of drops of liquid detergent. What happens? Why? Try and think of a situation where what you observed could be used in a practical (helpful way). Be ready to share your ideas with the class. You may use personal devices to research some ideas.
